Chaos at UG over blocked roads

Drivers trying to access the Legon roads have alighted from the vehicles to make sense of the situation
The decision by the University of Ghana to block all access routes into the campus to the public is reportedly causing chaos and traffic as commuters are struggling to enter and exit the institution.
The University on Saturday blocked all access routes into the school with the exception of the entrance from the Okponglo intersection.
Vehicles without the approved UG sticker are denied entry into the school.
The new directive has subsequently caused traffic congestion on the Legon-Madina Road and at the Link gate entrance into the school.
Some passengers and students have been forced to alight from vehicles and are walking to their destination into the campus.
Jonas Nyabor of Radio Universe reported on the Citi Breakfast Show that the “situation is very chaotic at the GIMPA Link to the University. The cars have blocked the streets and those with stickers are finding it difficult to go through.”
A parent who was on the way to drop off his child at the University’s primary school accused the Vice Chancellor of being insensitive to the situation.
He said: “The Vice Chancellor has nicodemously moved this cost [cost of rehabilitating the roads] into what he is calling the sale of a sticker and one sticker is GHC 400 per anum.”
According to him, the UG sticker is overpriced “and it amounts to the same GHC 1 that they were taking as toll” and called for the dismissal of the Vice Chancellor.
The angry parent appealed to the National Security Coordinator, Lt. Col. Larry Gbevlo Lartey and his operatives to “come and destroy this barrier too” insisting that the “Vice Chancellor was not employed to build roads.”
The authorities at the University announced the closure of access routes about two weeks ago after the school was forced to suspend its tolling system on the orders of government following a huge public outcry and the destruction of one of the school’s toll booth by national security operatives.
Prior to the closure, public announcements were made with flyers distributed to drivers who made entry into the school.
Meanwhile, the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) has disclosed that the University did not inform the Unit about its decision to block the roads.
ASP Alexander Obeng of the Unit said: “We were not informed as a stakeholder when it comes to road safety management in Ghana.”
He however gave the assurance that personnel of the MTTU will be deployed to the area to ensure the smooth flow of traffic and prevent any chaos.

Elikem breaks up with Pokello; impregnates German-based designer

Big Brother lovebirds Pokello and Elikem have split and the “fairy tale” love affair which has won the couple considerable admiration in both Ghana and Zimbabwe has collapsed, Graphic Showbiz has learnt.

Elikem confirmed the break-up to Showbiz last Sunday but refused to give details.
However, Showbiz has learnt that Elikem is now dating a 28-year-old fashion designer, Theresa Boateng, who came from Germany a month ago to outdoor her clothing line in Accra. Indeed Elikem and Theresa shared the, catwalk when the show opened at the Royal Richester.

Theresa herself has been very candid about her relationship with Elikem. She confirmed to Showbiz over the phone that she and Elikem were dating and she would soon return to Germany where she lives. She dropped a surprise hint that she was pregnant for Elikem.
“I am two weeks pregnant for Elikem. We fell in love the very first day I met him at the launch of my clothing line of which he was part of the models. We exchanged numbers and we started a reladonship from there.

It is barely a month since we got to know each other but anyone who has seen us together would think we have been dating for more than two years, simply because we click,” she said.

According to Theresa, Elikem is mature enough to take decisions by himself. “I don’t know why anyone should have problems with me. For some days now, family members of Elikem and friends of Pokello have been disturbing me with phone calls to stay away from Elikem but all I tell them is we are in love and no one can stop us”.

Asked whether she has spoken to Pokello, Theresa said, Pokello rather called her insulting her to leave her boyfriend alone.
A mother of two, Theresa said Elikem is the best person to decide who he wants to be with and once Elikem has settled on her, there is nothing anyone can do to change her mind.

“If Elikem tells me he is no more interested in me, then I will understand that I am the loser and back off but for now, we are happy together.

Update: Rescue team finally frees U.G student from mangled car

The rescue team has finally freed a student, badly trapped in a wreckage after a horrific accident on  the N1 Highway at Dzorwulu in Accra. It took three hours in desperate rescue efforts.

Onlookers stand shocked, rescue team gazed helpless, clueless and racked their brains on how to free the University of Ghana student who was growing weaker and weaker with faint but desperate wails for help.

Two others initially trapped, had been rescued and rushed to a hospital. The freed student was not severely injured physically apart from a few bruises on his hands and legs.

But he told rescue officers he was feeling pain in his waist area -- when he was being whisked away in an ambulance. The DAF trailer had trapped him for more than 3 hours. The accident happened at around 4:00am Friday morning.

The DAF trailer carrying cement slammed into the rear of a Toyota Corolla after the saloon car tried to overtake it. The trailer pushed it off the road, crashed into metal railings on the N1 Highway at Dzorwulu and continued its destructive impact until a street lamp stomached the wreckage to a stop.

Rescue efforts hit a snag due to what appeared to be lack of ideas on how to move the trailer from the saloon car. But rescue officers and onlookers kept the trapped student talking in a bid to get him from slipping away.

The driver of the trailer, Charles Otchere is unhurt and told myjoyonline reporter George Nyavor, he lost control of the steering wheel.

The rescue team asked onlookers to help offload cement bags to lighten the weight of the trailer. An excavator was used to separate the two vehicles in an effort to rescue the man trapped in the saloon car.

Movie actors shot after being mistaken for thieves

crime scene
A movie-making scene turned bloody last week when a 19-year-old lad was shot and injured by a passerby who mistook the scene for a real-life incident.
The man who delivered the shot, a driver of a saloon car, had heard people shouting ‘dzulor’, ‘dzulor’ (the Ga word for thief) and fired a gun from his moving car, injuring Solomon Agyei, who was standing in front of his mother’s shop and watching the actors and the production crew.
The bullet hit Agyei in the right shoulder.
The incident happened on the Bubuashie Olla Balm road during the shooting of a movie by the Joe Gray Movie Production House about 4 p.m. on February 28, 2014.

Eyewitness
An eyewitness told the Daily Graphic that the producers were filming a scene which involved a lady’s bag being snatched by two men on a motorbike.
According to her, she had seen one of the men on the motorbike snatch the lady’s bag “and the lady started screaming and calling for help to the effect that she had been attacked by thieves”.
As part of the movie, a number of other actors came around and started shouting ‘Dzulor’, ‘Ewi oo’, while they ran after the men on the motorbike.
The eyewitness said she suddenly saw someone in a saloon car pull out a gun and fire three times in the direction of the men on the motorbike, but the shots missed them and hit the victim instead.

Car number
“I am sure when the man in the saloon car heard the people shouting ‘thief’, ‘thief’, he thought it was a real scene and so he decided to shoot the ‘thieves’ but he missed his target. It appears he is not a good marksman,” the eyewitness said, as she pointed to two bullet marks on a wall close to the shop.
After the victim had been shot, she said, the driver of the car stopped briefly but onlookers, including the producers of the movie, were afraid to approach him, as he was armed.
Then shortly after that, the eyewitness said, the man in the saloon car drove away without the confused onlookers taking down the car number.

Kaneshie Police
The victim was rushed to the nearest clinic and the case reported to the Kaneshie Police.
He was treated and has since been discharged.
The Kaneshie District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Fleance Adika, confirmed the incident to the Daily Graphic and stated that the police were still investigating the matter.
He said the police were yet to identify the gunman and make an arrest, as eyewitnesses and the movie production crew were unable to capture the car number or tell the exact make of the car.

Ghana’s Finest Rapper E.L Involved In A Fatal Accident At Legon

EL

Ghana’s finest rapper and “Crazy Love” hit maker E.L was involved in a fatal accident which could have ended the musician’s career.
The BBnZ artiste was on his way to Limann Hall inside Legon for aperformance at around 2:30am saturday morning when a saloon car crashed into his car at Emmanuel Eye Clinic, East Legon leading to fatal injuries on the rapper and his team members. GeorgeBritton.com can exclusively say the musician is in the hospital and is currently undergoing treatment but prayers is what is needed for him at this moment.
Attempts to speak to any member of the BBnZ crew has proven futile. But at the moment Ghanaians can only have their fingers crossed and hope for the best for the musician who is at the peak of his career, and also if Nikki Samonas truly wants to have twins for E.L, then this is the time she needs to show the rapper some good love and commitment. Get well soon E.L!!

Mason jailed for defiling girl, 13

Defilement-Poster

A mason has been slapped with a seven-year jail term for defiling a 13-year-old girl resulting in her pregnancy.
Emmanuel Gyau, had chanted incantations on February 20, 2014 in his bid to "spiritually influence" the trial judge but that did not yield any positive results.
The trial judge on that day noticed his weird behaviour laced with incantations and murmurings and warned him that “the law is the law, incantations will not help you.”
Gyau had pleaded guilty to defiling and impregnating the girl and was convicted on his own plea by the court, presided over by Ms Ellen Vivian Amoah.
Gyau had earlier pleaded not guilty to the charge of defilement but changed his plea to guilty with explanation on February 11, 2014.
February 11 plea
Gyau pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy.
“I will accept the pregnancy and look after the girl to be delivered of the baby. Please temper justice with mercy.”
While admitting to sleeping with the victim, Gyau maintained that he did not force her into the act but rather proposed love to her.
Facts of the case
The prosecutor, Inspector Kofi Atimbire, had told the court that the complainant in the case, Ms Leticia Afotey, is the sister-in-law of the victim and lived in the same vicinity with Gyau at Nungua, a suburb of Accra.
Sometime in December last year, the victim and her younger brother went to town to sell satchet water.
Gyau approached the victim to buy some but unknown to the victim, Gyau had the intent to sleep with her.
Mr Atimbire said to carry out his intention, Gyau sent the victim's younger brother to go and buy him biscuits and as soon as the young boy left the scene, Gyau held and dragged the victim into a wooden structure which served as his sleeping place, and sexually abused her.
To muffle her shout for help, Gyau used his hand to cover the victim's mouth.
After the act, Gyau abandoned the crying victim in the wooden structure until she was helped to come out by her younger brother who had then returned from the errand.
Gyau later reappeared and gave GH¢3 to the victim as transport.
“The victim kept her ordeal, but kept reporting sick periodically,” Mr Atimbire said.
He said this made Ms Afotey, who suspected that the victim was pregnant, to interview her following which she mentioned Gyau as the culprit.
The complainant then reported the matter to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU).
Ultimately, a hospital confirmed that the victim was two months-and-a week pregnant.

Death of 24-year-old lady at Korle-Bu Polyclinic: Family ready to seek legal redress

The family of the 24-year-old lady, who died last Sunday after she was allegedly neglected by health workers at the Korle-Bu polyclinic, have indicated their readiness to pursue legal redress on the issue if that is the final way to go.
According to them, the three months pregnant Abigail Boateng would have survived, if she was attended to by the doctor and nurse on duty at the time.
Speaking to Joy News, Friday, a sister to the deceased, Jessica Boateng revealed that autopsy reports has linked her sister's death to ectopic pregnancy but was insistent that the family will go all out to request for justice.
"We want the council to investigate into it to see what really happened because if the doctor attended to us, it wouldn't happen this way...
"We don't know about the procedure so supposing we submit it [petition] to them [Medical and Dental Council] and that [legal redress] is the way to go, we are ready", she asserted.
Jessica Boateng further noted that the family's petition on the issue will soon be presented to the Medical and Dental Council after some few enquiries were done.
The family would be asking the council to conduct investigations into the case to see what went wrong.
Meanwhile, the head of the Polyclinic Dr. David Nortey tells Joy News that he has received responses from a letter he wrote to the medical staff who were on duty at the time the incident occurred.
He says the affected staff will be summoned before a decision would be taken on their case.
